Problems with your IT? Consider this…

January 8, 2008

Managed services may be your saviour. This is a new form of outsourcing where certain tasks are outsourced and eventually measured on results. A new model that can even drive down the costs of your IT.

Here’s a link that says it well . . . ThinkIT Services.

We have talked about this before as an alternative to the traditional IT outsource models. What makes it so important now is that it also gives the small and medium enterprise access to talented and skilled IT services in an affordable package.

it-management.ca can help you determine what your needs are and find the best managed service provider to meet those needs.

IT Department for Hire – Managed Service Providers

August 9, 2007

Managed service providers or MSPs, provide the expertise and skill required to manage and support your infrastructure and desktop computing. This new model brings value to your IT operation by providing such services as monitoring your server and network environments for performance and failure alerts, and responding accordingly, to more comprehensive options such as desktop configuration and service desk support. MSPs can be your IT department for a lot lower cost than hiring in house IT staff.

If you have IT staff onsite, consider using a MSP to perform the routine and mundane tasks such as error log checking, patch updates and preemptive maintenance. This leaves your internal staff time to work with your business folks in bringing IT solutions to business problems. Your in house IT staff know your business, so their true value to you is in supporting your business – not in supporting technology.

There is an increasing trend toward this type of model for SMEs. The goal is to make better use of IT as a strategic business tool while still keeping costs under control. An MSP brings with them high technical skills and expertise but a lower cost and higher productivity than a general purpose IT technician.

Scratch Where it Itches!

July 18, 2007

I’ve always said “if you want to be successful in business, find out what your customers want and give it to them!”.

The other day while having lunch with a successful business man from Red Deer, I was making my pitch on what I do and how it-management.ca can provide value to their IT operation and benefit the enterprise. To paraphrase him, he said “you’ve got to scratch where it itches!” If you scratch where it isn’t itchy – you’re just wasting time.

So where does your IT itch?

If I were to meet with you for the first time, I’d ask these three simple questions:

1. What do you like about your IT operation?

For instance: what happens that satisfies you and what goes on that gives you the feeling that you are getting value for the dollars and time you spend on computing?

2. What don’t you like about your IT operation?

For instance: what irritates you and your people? Where is IT broken in your company?

3. What do you want me to do for you?

What are your expectations? What can I do that would meet with your idea of value for dollars spent on IT?

We won’t neglect the answers to the first question – if it works, don’t fix it! As a matter of fact, let’s find out why it’s not itchy and do it some more in other areas.

For the answers to queston number two – that’s where the itch is. So let’s start scratching there!

Of course, your reply to number three is your way of telling me where to scratch, how hard, and when to stop.

From here we can start to plan and strategize on how to scratch where it itches.
